Jane Ohlmeyer in India

In November, VOICES PI Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, travelled to India to speak about her recent book, Making Empire: Ireland, Imperialism and the Early Modern World (Oxford University Press) and the VOICES project.

The trip included the official Indian launch of the book in Delhi by the Irish Ambassador, Kevin Kelly and British High Commissioner, Lindy Cameron CB OBE.  This was the first time that the two embassies had jointly organised an event, which made it particularly special.

After a lively fireside chat with historians William Dalrymple and Swapna Liddle in the Leela Palace, Professor Ohlmeyer also had an opportunity to speak about the book at Jawaharlal Nehru University, as part of a lecture series marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between Ireland and India.

The VOICES project featured in a talk at Jesus and Mary College, where the topic was ‘Ireland, Empire and Women’ to a really engaged audience of female students.  Professor Ohlmeyer said, ‘I’m so grateful to our ambassador, Kevin Kelly, and his team for making this visit to Delhi possible’.

Professor Ohlmeyer also had the pleasure of meeting with Leo Varadkar who just happened to be in town. What a small world it is!
